Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT – Best Overall

Therm a rest neoloft

www.amazon.com

For ultralight backpackers who refuse to compromise on comfort, the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT is a standout choice. Weighing just 12.5 oz (355 g), this pad is engineered to provide optimal warmth and support without adding unnecessary bulk to your pack. Its 4.5 R-value ensures reliable insulation for three-season adventures, keeping you warm even when temperatures dip.

The pad’s Triangular Core Matrix™ construction minimizes heat loss while maintaining stability, effectively distributing your weight for a more restful sleep. With a 3-inch thickness, it offers ample cushioning without feeling like a balloon beneath you. Despite its durable 30D ripstop nylon construction, it packs down to the size of a water bottle, making it easy to stow away.

Pros:

  • Ultralight and compact for long treks
  • High R-value for impressive warmth-to-weight ratio
  • 3-inch thickness for enhanced comfort

Drawback: The crinkly fabric can be slightly noisy, but it’s a small trade-off for the exceptional insulation and lightweight design.

Promising review: “This pad is quite possibly the most comfortable backpacking pad I have ever tried. I slept on it indoors for a test the first night and was amazed, no pressure points, no soreness and it was super quiet. The fabric is very soft next to skin.” – Kevin

“Super comfy, like seriously super nice. I was expecting it to be a little warmer. To be fair it was 36 degrees outside and the ground was still frozen about 2-3 inches down. I’m guessing that is the issue but I just didn’t expect it to be cold. If it wasn’t for my quilt keeping me warm I would have had some real issues. Still deserves 4 stars and I am sure it will be warm enough once the ground thaws.” – Michael

Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated – Best for Side Sleepers

Sea to summit

www.amazon.com

With a thickness of 4 inches, the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated provides luxurious cushioning for side sleepers who need a little extra comfort. Its Air Sprung Cells distribute weight evenly, mimicking the feel of a traditional mattress. Plus, its 3.2 R-value offers reliable warmth in chilly conditions.

Pros:

  • Extremely comfortable and supportive
  • Quiet fabric
  • Easy inflation and deflation

Drawback: Slightly heavier than other options.

Promising review:Ultralight, ultra comfortable, ultra strong! Increased r-value and less weight than the mens. Not annoying like Thermarest. Medium sized dog-proof. Would buy again!

I am an inverted triangle body shape with pretty wide shoulders and love that the mat stays wide even down towards my hips. Lots of room to roll around on as an active sleeper! It also isn’t very crinkly or loud. Definitely not enough to disturb or irritate me in the middle of the night. I think it was also just barely lighter weight than the men’s version as well. I will say it does take up most of the floor space in my Copper Spur UL1. But with the 4″ of padding I’ve never had a problem hitting my head or feet on the tent while sleeping. This is hands down the best pad I have ever used! It is also bomb proof as my dog had moved all over it getting comfortable and I have had no issues with holes or punctures!” – Robert

Nice and thick for a side sleeper. Never bottomed out. Tested it overnight on bedroom floor and slept great. Packs up very small. Works great part of my Big Agnes Diamond Park sleep system. Not loud when rolling over. Great addition to my motorcycle camping kit.” – TN Thompson

“Packed this on my last motorcycle trip not expecting much from it. Far more comfortable than any iso mat that I’ve used in the past, and stores in a smaller space. Would absolutely recommend if space is a concern and comfort is desired. I’m 6’4” and 265 lbs and had no issues with it.” – Alex

Promising review:Easy to inflate even after hiking all day. Used for 2 nights. Very comfortable. Easy to deflate and pack away as long as you can lay it flat to roll. Pleasantly surprised at how comfortable this was. Lightweight. Rolls up small. Looking forward to my next backpacking adventure.” – Liz

“I’m a 50 year-old somewhat overweight side sleeper. This pad works great, I do not hit the ground like I did with my previous pad! While it’s certainly no 3.5” thick NEMO pad, it’s also less than half the price. The only tricky thing I’ve learned is to make sure you’ve pushed the inflate/deflate thing all the way until it locks down or it will leak slowly overnight. Since that night I’ve had zero issues and slept great! Also works great with the Flextail Zero pump!” – D_J

Pros:

  • Extra-thick for ultimate comfort
  • Excellent insulation for all-season use
  • Durable, puncture-resistant materials

Drawback: Heavy and bulky; best for car camping.

Promising review: “The only thing I dislike about this, is that it didn’t exist sooner. Easily the best camping air mattress I’ve ever used. It felt like sleeping in my own bed, because of the foam, it’s great. I slept well, all night, on the ground, in the woods. No tossing and turning, and I felt rested in the morning. It’s not loud or makes weird noises when you move around on it, and it feels soft to the touch instead of plastic or something. It will basically self inflate, but the bag it’s stored in can be used as a pump, which is neat, but I bought the tiny pump for it. Inflates in under 10 minutes I think. It’s a bit bulky, not for backpacking but if your worried about your back and want to camp, use this mattress, my 75yo dad approves. It seems well built and can support my fat butt so I recon it will yours too, and be comfy. ” – Raijiin
