Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise, but what if you could level up your routine without spending hours in the gym? Weighted vest — is a game-changing fitness accessory that anyone can use, from young fitness enthusiasts aiming to build muscle to older adults looking to maintain strength and balance. Whether you’re strolling around the neighborhood, hiking up a trail, or walking on a treadmill, a weighted vest can transform a regular walk into a total-body workout.

What Are Weighted Vests?

A weighted vest is a wearable accessory designed to add extra resistance to your body during exercise. These vests come in various weights, ranging from as light as 1 pound to over 50 pounds, allowing you to customize the intensity of your workout. They’re typically filled with small weight packs, sandbags, or steel plates that are evenly distributed across the vest to prevent strain and maintain balance.

For those less familiar, think of a weighted vest as a hands-free way to add resistance without the hassle of carrying dumbbells or kettlebells. Slip it on, secure the straps, and you’re ready to boost your walking workout — all while keeping your hands free.

Types of Weighted Vests: Fixed vs. Adjustable

Weighted vests come in two primary categories:

  1. Fixed Weight Vests:
These vests come with a predetermined weight — typically ranging from 5 to 30 pounds. Fixed weight vests are ideal for beginners who want a straightforward, no-fuss option. However, they don’t allow for gradual progression. Once you’ve mastered the weight, you may need to invest in a heavier vest to maintain intensity.
  2. Adjustable Weight Vests:
Adjustable vests offer more flexibility. They come with multiple weight pockets that can be filled or emptied, allowing you to increase or decrease resistance as your fitness level changes. These vests are perfect for those who want to start light and gradually increase the load. They’re also excellent for sharing among family members with different strength levels.

How to Choose the Right Weighted Vest

Selecting the right vest depends on several factors:

  • Fitness Level:
Beginners should start with lighter weights, such as 5-10% of their body weight. More experienced users can gradually increase the weight to 15-20%.
  • Purpose:
If you’re using the vest for walking, a lighter load (10-20 pounds) is typically sufficient. For more intense strength training, consider a vest with a heavier weight capacity.
  • Adjustability:
Adjustable vests are ideal if you plan to use the vest for various activities or share it with others.
  • Fit and Comfort:
Look for padded straps, breathable material, and adjustable closures to ensure a secure, comfortable fit. A poorly fitted vest can cause chafing, discomfort, and even injury.
  • Quality and Durability:
Opt for high-quality materials like neoprene, nylon, or reinforced fabric to ensure the vest withstands repeated use.
  • Safety Features:
For outdoor walking, consider a vest with reflective strips for visibility during early morning or evening walks.

How to Use a Weighted Vest for Walking

  1. Start Light:
Begin with a vest that is 5-10% of your body weight to allow your muscles and joints to adjust.
  2. Warm Up:
Perform dynamic stretches, such as leg swings and arm circles, to prepare your body for the added resistance.
  3. Maintain Proper Posture:
Stand tall, engage your core, and walk with controlled, deliberate steps. Avoid leaning forward or arching your back, as the extra weight may alter your natural walking form.
  4. Monitor Your Breathing:
The added weight will increase your heart rate. Focus on deep, controlled breaths to maintain endurance.
  5. Cool Down:
After your walk, remove the vest and perform gentle stretches to release tension and prevent stiffness.

Benefits of Walking with a Weighted Vest

  • Increased Calorie Burn:
Adding resistance helps elevate your heart rate, resulting in a higher calorie burn compared to regular walking.
  • Improved Muscle Strength:
The extra weight engages your core, legs, and back, promoting muscle endurance and overall strength.
  • Bone Density Boost:
Weighted vests create mild impact resistance, stimulating bone growth and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Enhanced Cardiovascular Fitness:
The added resistance challenges your heart and lungs, improving cardiovascular health.
  • Functional Fitness:
Weighted vests mimic real-life scenarios, such as carrying groceries or lifting heavy objects, making everyday activities feel easier.

What to Look for in a Weighted Vest

  • Weight Range:
Ensure the vest accommodates your fitness level and goals.
  • Comfort and Fit:
Padded straps and adjustable closures are essential for a snug, secure fit.
  • Weight Distribution:
Even weight distribution is crucial for preventing back strain and maintaining balance.
  • Breathability:
Opt for moisture-wicking fabric to prevent overheating, especially during longer walks.
  • Durability:
High-quality stitching and reinforced pockets will extend the life of your vest.
  • Ease of Use:
Adjustable weight pockets allow for quick changes between sets or workouts.

Promising review: “Extremely comfortable. There are 3 packs of 1lb removable weights in the front & back (3 per side) and the shell itself is 4lbs. I work out a lot and was looking for this to wear around the house & on the treadmill for easy extra exercise while gadding about the house. I removed 1 set of weights from each side so the vest is at 8 lbs. will graduate to the full 10 lbs eventually. Love the versatility.” –

Promising review: “I recently picked up the 20lb RUNMax Weighted Vest, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite additions to my fitness routine. It fits snugly, doesn’t shift or bounce around during movement, and adds just the right amount of challenge to push my workouts to the next level.

Whether I’m doing bodyweight exercises, running, or yard work (yes, even mowing the lawn), this vest stays in place and performs great. The quality feels durable, and the adjustable straps make it easy to get a secure fit.” – Bryan

“I bought the 60 pound vest. There’s 10 bags on the vest, 5 on the front and 5 on the back, the bags aren’t solid, you can remove any amount of bags you want, each bag weights around 5 pounds and 13 Oz and the vest weights around 2 pounds, so if you use one bag and the vest, you gain around 8 pounds, it’s made with good materials. I used it for 2 hours and it’s still comfortable after the exercise.

Tips:

If you have a long exercise routine, start with one bag even if it feels light, after a while you’ll start feeling it, if at the end it felt comfortable, the next exercise day add another bag, that way you’ll make sure you won’t get injured.

If you have lower back issues. If you have more weight on the back, you’ll feel a small pull on the side you have more weight and you feel the lower part of the vest pushing your lower back, after a while it started hurting, when a moved the bag to the front, it stopped hurting, for me having the higher weight value in the front helps.

If you do pullups and have a small frame, you feel the vest scratching your biceps, it’s a little annoying, but use a longer sleeve T-shirt, or put a piece of cotton cloth on the front side of the vest while doing pullups and you’re good.

If you do pushups, you may not have full motion, get some pushups handles or something that raises you a few inches from the floor, I use 3 pieces of cinder block that raised me around 6 inches from the floor and it worked, make sure that whatever you use is stable and flat.

If you do regular crunches on the floor, you can do them with the vest on but you will also lose a little range, take your vest off and hold the bag on your chest if you want some resistance or do them with the vest if it feels good.

Everything else I did felt comfortable to do with the vest, including stretching exercise.” – Abraham Roldan Pardo

Promising review: “This is so comfortable to wear and not at all bulky, nor does it impair movement. I wear it grocery shopping, taking my dog for a walk, or just getting things done around the house. The single clip closure is well-made and is easy to adjust. 12 pounds is a nice weight to start with where it’s nowhere close to rucking, but I can feel the benefit after each use. After only having it a week, I feel like it’s paid for itself. Would highly recommend for daily use to have just a little extra.” –

Several weeks of research into weights and walking let me to the conclusion that the best (and safest) alternative to adding weight to my walking was a vest, rather than wrist, ankle, or waist. Promising review: “This weight vest has a very unique design in that it is very form fitting and can be pretty snug. As a result, by design it moves very little if at all during walking and a little bit when running. Even though it is tight across the chest, it doesn’t restrict breathing because of the expandable side cords. I have owned several weight vests and this is by far the best and most comfortable available that I have tried. Specifically, it doesn’t weigh your shoulders down and make you fight against it causing shoulder/neck fatigue which means you can wear it for longer periods of time. Yes, it is very expensive, but after trying several vests for comfort you end up spending the same amount for less-than-optimal multiple other products. The total weight limit is 20 pounds and that may be significantly less than some other vests, but you can walk up and down hills and that 20 pounds is no longer easy. This is clearly the best vest I own and wish I had just bought it up front without trying other vests.” – daniel dumitru

Mir vest

Promising review: “It lays comfortably, very rugged material even for the pockets which apparently isn’t very common. The weights are snug in the pockets and have a large heavy Velcro flap that closes over the top – they aren’t going anywhere whatever you do in any direction, any force.

The shoulders have thick Velcro to attach the front to the back, so you can adjust it to your frame. With standard 6 weights, it held fine by itself, but with extra weights the Velcro would start to loosen up then I noticed the extra straps and double D rings to go over the shoulders to keep it together, basically use the Velcro to get the fitting right then strap it to keep it in place with weight.

There are other straps to go around that will keep it from flopping around. Run, flip, jump, whatever – it’ll be there for you. It lifts on and off pretty easily.” –
